About Balolo:

Balolo [bar-lo-lo] or Palolo [par-lo-lo] as it is known by other Pacific Islanders is a greenish worm delicacy. In Mid October and Mid November, it squirts itself out from the reef bed and covers the lagoon with massive patch of greenish layer of broken spaghetti like mass. Usually comes out before the break of dawn.

Balolo is usually harvested, as everywhere else in the Pacific before sunrise. This is the uniqueness and beauty of Balolo because the heat of the sun will cause it to melt and disappear completely. Leaving behind nothing but a fishy smell along the beach. And in the next high tide, everything is gone.

Whatever that is scooped out in buckets has to be rinsed in fresh water. This is wrapped in leaves and baked in an earth oven for the village feast.

Harvest times are both in mid October and mid November. It is herald by the appearance of Balolo heads on the water surface. They are grey and reddish in color. On the third night after this appearance, at dawn, the Balolo is harvested.

Take a chance for The Greatest Adventure of your life. Find out for yourself how this unique reef creature impacts the life of locals here.

Our ancestral Yearly Calendar and harvest season are also related to Balolo harvesting.
